Mrs. Sadia Suleiman Alambah, aged 65, residing in Bifatu, a kebele under Filtu Woreda, heads a household of ten individuals. Facing significant challenges due to the absence of proper toilet infrastructure, the community was exposed to health hazards, including contamination-related diseases.

The lack of privacy during rainy seasons forced individuals to defecate in the open, leading to human waste draining into ponds and water tanks, particularly affecting women and children.

Intervention by RACIDA:

RACIDA addressed these challenges by constructing flood-protected twin toilets equipped with solar lights and handwashing containers. The construction design considered community involvement in site selection, ensuring separate latrine rooms for males and females.

The installation of solar lights enhance security during nighttime use, while the handwashing containers play a crucial role in preventing the spread of viruses and bacteria.

 Impact on Health and Dignity:

Mrs. Sadia expressed gratitude for the project’s positive impact on their living standards. She highlighted the role of such sanitation facilities in promoting health by preventing environmental contamination and reducing health risks.

The provision of well-constructed latrines will not only ensure proper waste disposal but also uphold the privacy and dignity of users, especially women facing challenging circumstances.

Community Empowerment:

Inspired by RACIDA’s initiative, the community replicated the project, initiating the construction of additional latrines. This self-driven effort aimed to showcase their capacity to avoid dependency in the future, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. Mrs. Sadia emphasized on need for such significant community projects, affirming that this latrine construction initiative will mark a milestone for Bifatu, alleviating their suffering.

 Conclusion:

RACIDA’s intervention in Bifatu through the EHF project will successfully address sanitation challenges, promote health, privacy, and community empowerment. Mrs. Sadia’s testimonial illustrates how an impactful project can not only transform living standards but also inspire communities to take charge of their future.
