RACIDA field visit: Farmers in Girisa, Mandera County review climate-smart crops on reclaimed land.

In Mandera County’s Grisa location, local farmer groups are demonstrating climate resilience in practice, where invasive species once dominated, productive farmland is re-emerging, marking a tangible milestone supported through the BORESHA-NABAD Project.

During a monitoring visit, RACIDA team met and engaged Moneymaker and Hongos farmer groups, who are actively cultivating over 40 acres of reclaimed land. This achievement is part of a wider 120-acre land restoration initiative, where Prosopis and other invasive species were cleared to restore agricultural productivity and strengthen climate adaptation.

With complementary support from #HANAANO Project, farmers received climate-smart inputs including maize, sorghum, Sudan grass, and other cash crops. The combined approach of BORESHA-NABAD and HANAANO integrates land restoration, climate-resilient production, and market-oriented farming, enabling communities to sustain livelihoods even amid prolonged drought conditions.

This is resilience in action: restored ecosystems, strengthened livelihoods, and revitalized local markets, demonstrating how community-led interventions can deliver sustainable impact and help dryland communities adapt to climate shocks.
