Our Strategy

RACIDA undertakes various humanitarian responses to natural and manmade hazards, like droughts, floods and conflicts. RACIDA has been over the years an important player in development & relief operations in the region. This is done through preparedness, mitigation and adaptation strategies to disaster events through community engagement / dialogue, trainings, development and management of sustainable structural facilities and emergency responses to various thematic areas.

RACIDA’s overall programmes revolve around disaster preparedness, mitigation, adaptation and strengthening the capacities of the local communities and Community Based Organisations to make them effective to make them more effective to prepare for emergency management and rehabilitation. RACIDA uses unique participatory approach of Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) by the use of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools to empower communities to control and manage their local (natural) resources relevant to the regions harsh climate & remoteness.

Since 2006 RACIDA has been implementing Food security and livelihoods, WASH, Education, Health and Nutrition, Peace and security, DRR and Resilience, Governance, Democracy and human rights and Natural resource Management programs funded by various organizations including NCA, ACT Alliance, CORDAID, ECHO, Diakonie Humanitarian Aid, DFID, USAID, Helpage International, NAK Karitativ, UN Agencies like UNDP, UNICEF, UN-Habitat and the government of Kenya.

Food Security and Livelihoods Program

RACIDA’s food Security and livelihoods program incorporates a wide collection of activities customized to meet a community’s specific needs that are designed to bolster agricultural production, jumpstart local markets, support micro-enterprise initiatives and enhance vulnerable communities’ access to sustainable sources of food and income security. Education Program

RACIDA’s education program is geared towards addressing the high rate of drop out for school children. This is being achieved through increasing school infrastructure like building classrooms, solar installation and water storage tanks to preserve water.

Sensitizing locals against traditional cultures that are, Female Genital Cut and marrying girls off at a tender age.

Construction of sanitation facilities separate for boys and girls, equipping boarding primary schools, provision of learning aids, provision of sanitary towels to resolve absentiseem and transition. The program is also piloting the establishment of girls peer group and conduct girls camps in schools to address issues affecting girl’s enrol- ment and retentions such as early marriage, Female Genital Mutilation.

The girls are also equipped with life skills, which will serve as drivers of change in their respective communities and conduct peer education at household levels to follow up on girls who have either dropped out of schools or have reached school going age and are yet to enrol in school. This project is reaching out to more than 52,000 school children in 136 primary schools across Wajir and Mandera Counties. Read More

Governance and Human Rights Program

Our governance and human rights program is committed in promoting the values of democratic governance, the rule of law, human rights, security & peace building and justice, accountability, equity and natural resources management in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands.

RACIDA is currently implementing a peace and security program aimed to provide a more effective, accountable and responsive public services in the both Counties of Wajir and Mandera. It’s preparing citizens to respond quickly to conflict, insecurity and other crime incidents is working to establish county peace/security forums in areas at high risk of conflict and other sort of violence. The organization is well regarded in these Counties and maintains strong coordination with the County stakeholders and leaders both at Counties and National level. Read More

Health and Nutrition Program

Proper nutrition is a powerful good; people who are well nourished are more likely to be healthy, productive and able to learn. Good nutrition benefits families, their communities and the world as a whole. Malnutrition is, by the same logic, devastating. Good nutrition is the bedrock of child survival, health and development. Well-nourished children are better able to grow and learn, to participate in and contribute to their communities, and to be resilient in the face of disease, disasters, and other global crises. Environment and Natural Resource Management Projects

The environment and natural resource management projects focus on the management of natural resources which is equally increasingly important driver of sustainable economic growth. 70% of RACIDA’s total project portfolio have directly benefitted approximately 180,500 people in Mandera and Wajir Counties. RACIDA is a member of WASH Impact Network, an online platform, which can be accessed at washinnovations.r4d.org. This is a network funded by Results For Development (R4D) and implemented by Millennium Water Alliance (MWA) founded for the promotion and marketing of more than 120 WASH innovative organizations across India and East Africa.

The Network is helping these organizations to understand some of the shared challenges of WASH organizations, and highlights some opportunities for collaboration and joint problem solving.

RACIDA is also a member of the national level Water Environmental and Sanitation Coordination (WESCORD) in which it is the secretariat in Mandera County. It is also a strong member of the NGO forums in Mandera and Wajir Counties.

RACIDA is operating in the two counties of Wajir and Mandera of Northern Kenya, having operation offices in Wajir town of Wajir County and Rhamu and Mandera towns of Mandera County. It’s affiliate RACIDA Ethiopia is also working in Dollo Ado, Mubarak, Dheka Suftu and Filtu districts of Liban zone in southern Ethiopia.

RACIDA is also registered in South Central Somalia currently working in the Gedo region with an office in Baalad Hawa. It is part of the WASH cluster partner in Gedo and Food security partner in lower Shabelle region.

All field offices are responsible for implementation and coordination of programmes while the Nairobi office is for networking, resource mobilisation, coordination and communication with stakeholders and partners as well as linking local programmes and inter and national programmes.
